Curiosity > Expertise Trust Us (and Ted Lasso)

We don’t believe clients need another agency promising “strategy.” They need an agency that understands what they’re trying to accomplish as a business and can figure out how marketing will help get them there.

That means strategy isn’t a phase we rush through to get to the “real work.” It’s how we make sure we’re solving the right problem in the first place. It creates the framework, the roadmaps, the way. And it’s the difference between marketing that simply exists and marketing that actually moves people to action and moves the business forward.

We often think of ourselves as our clients’ very own Ted Lasso.

We won’t pretend to know as much as you about your business. We won’t claim to be your internal industry SMEs. But we will learn the right things fast, and we know how to bring our marketing expertise to your business challenges. We show up curious, committed, and ready to learn. We focus on the people, the why, and the how. We roll up our sleeves, ask the questions that make you pause, challenge assumptions, and help bring clarity to complexity. And together, we create work that matters. Work that drives actions. Work that moves your business forward. Work that simply, works.

We do this by bringing our own expertise to the table. Though we may not know everything about your business yet, we know how to identify the role marketing can play in solving your business challenges and build a plan that gets results. We know how to get to your why, understand what will move people, and turn that understanding into action.

Or, as Ted would say: “I do love a locker room strategy session. It smells like potential.”

That belief lies in the work, in the process, and in the people. It’s where the work begins.

Lead with strategy, not tactics

Good marketing doesn’t happen by accident. It requires intention. It requires knowing who you’re talking to, what you want them to feel, what you want them to think, and what you want them to do.

That might sound simple. It’s not.

To truly move people to action, you have to understand what motivates them, what holds them back, and what they value most. You have to get underneath the surface and into the psychology of your audience. You have to understand your team’s strengths and how to use them best. Because the best marketing doesn’t just inform, it makes you feel something. And those feelings shape thoughts, and those thoughts lead to action.

Whether it’s a website, a campaign, an SEO strategy, or a soccer match, the people and the why are what are going to lead to a winning game plan. The tactics and the execution come after.

A strong strategic foundation gives us that winning game plan. It’s where we define the point of view, sharpen the message, and determine the smartest path forward to move the needle (or get a lead, score a goal or whatever it is you’re trying to do).

Bringing Marketing Expertise to the Table

When we’re putting together marketing strategies, what we truly need is marketing expertise, not necessarily industry expertise. This helps us have an open mind, or as Ted would say, “be curious, not judgmental.” We can bring in best practices from any industry, and not have blinders on for the way the industry does it and has always done it. It allows us to observe, find patterns, and bring solutions to the table that give you an actual edge.

Remember the dart scene in Ted Lasso? Ted was judged, and therefore underestimated. The key is to get curious before judging, ask good questions, and not make any assumptions.

Strategy Matters Now More Than Ever

Marketing is moving faster than most teams can think. AI has lowered the barrier to execution. Channels have multiplied. Budgets are under greater scrutiny. And the pressure to do something quickly can often outweigh the discipline to ask whether it’s the right thing.

In this environment, strategy isn’t a luxury or a slowdown. It’s the filter that keeps teams focused, aligned, and effective. Without it, brands risk producing more work with less impact. With it, every decision has purpose and every dollar works harder. It allows teams to:

  • Establish a clear point of view and north star for the work
  • Distill complex ideas into simple, powerful messaging
  • Shift focus away from internal noise and toward the customer
  • Ensure every team and discipline is working toward the same goal

Without strategy, teams can move fast, but not always in the same direction. Strategy gives everyone a game plan. Execution is cheaper than ever. Clarity is the new premium.

What the Strategic Process Looks Like

Digging Deep

Our process always starts with curiosity. We ask questions. A lot of them. We look for patterns, pressure-test ideas, and poke holes. Not to be difficult, but to get to the truth. Often, what feels obvious to an outside perspective isn’t obvious at all when you’re living inside the business or organization every day. That’s where fresh eyes make all the difference.

Doing the Research

We use a mix of primary and secondary research to uncover insights. Depending on the project, that might look like an all-day, in-person strategy workshop or a focused virtual discovery session. Either way, these moments are energizing. They’re collaborative. And they’re usually filled with more than a few “aha” moments.

Simplify, Clarify, & Verify

Clients often tell us they leave these sessions feeling clearer, more confident, and genuinely excited about what’s ahead. Then comes what we lovingly call our “black box.” This is where the KPS3 team synthesizes everything we’ve learned. We debate. We challenge each other. We refine. We shape a strategic point of view and turn insight into a plan. It’s thoughtful. It’s intentional. And it’s where the magic happens.

What You Get at the End

At the end of the process, we deliver either a strategic brief or a full strategic foundation, depending on the scope of the project. These documents distill a set of choices that focuses us as a team. Who we are, what we’ll stand for, and how we win, charting a clear path forward.

It becomes the blueprint our teams use throughout the life of the project. With a clear strategy in place, execution becomes more focused, more efficient, and more impactful.

Skipping strategy is like skipping practice. You might still show up on game day, but you won’t know the plays or how to win. Or, in Ted’s words: “Believe.” Believe because strategy isn’t in the plays, it’s in the why, the people, the clarity. Believe because when you build the right foundation, winning is inevitable.
