Outdoor obsessed, slightly competitive, and a very proud mama bear
Nicole Shearer joined KPS3 in May 2021 as a public relations director. With nearly two decades of public relations experience, Nicole understands how a solid communications strategy will ensure long-term business success.
Born and raised in San Jose, California, Nicole was drawn to the mountains early on. This calling led her to the University of Nevada, Reno where she graduated with a journalism degree in 2003. Her early career was spent in Lake Tahoe, California working for a small public relations agency with travel and tourism clients like the Lake Tahoe Marathon, North Lake Tahoe Resort Association, and Tahoe Rim Trail.
Next, she moved into a role at Northstar-at-Tahoe, where she supervised the communications initiatives for the resort, organized media familiarization tours, acted as the on-camera spokesperson, managed photoshoots, and developed seasonal press kits. Her travel and tourism/hospitality experience continued when she moved on to become an account supervisor at Switchback PR +Marketing, Inc. in Truckee, California. While at Switchback, Nicole ran point on several client accounts, wove narratives, and landed national media placements for Chase International, Port Ludlow Resort, the Truckee Chamber of Commerce, and Ruby Mountain Helicopter Skiing.
In 2007, Nicole moved back to Reno and went to work for Renown Health. At Renown she was instrumental in starting the organization’s first social and digital media communications. While working for Northern Nevada’s largest private, not-for-profit healthcare network, she developed and executed comprehensive public relations plans, guided PR for the opening of Renown Children’s Hospital; and developed multiple stroke awareness campaigns for the Renown Institute for Neurosciences.
From July 2013 through April of 2021, Nicole worked in higher education public relations at the University of Nevada, Reno. There, she helped advance strategic priorities through communications initiatives in support of The College of Businesses, Student Services, and University Police Services. She drove the creation and implementation of university-wide social media strategies, guidelines, and policies; pitched stories resulting in national media placement; provided faculty and leader media training; led a team of student workers; and wrote and edited more stories and press releases than she can count. Nicole is also no stranger to crisis communications with numerous issues and crises managed throughout her career.
When she’s not thinking up ways to tell an interesting or relevant story, planning clever social media engagement strategies, or developing plans for maximum client exposure, Nicole can be found – you guessed it – in the mountains. Whether camping, hiking, skiing, or just outside, Nicole shares her passion for an active lifestyle with her husband and their two energetic boys. With undeniable wanderlust, she and her family – aka Team Shearer – are always up for an adventure.
